This painting draws me in. I sort through the layers to form an understanding.
So I interpret, not so much with logic as with my minds eye.
Layers. Layers to explore. Reading like a book: developing and detailing certain “characters” - visually communicating a “description” that is interesting – leaving the viewer (or reader) with a sense of personal interpretation but yet a sense of connection with the piece as well as the artist.
There is so much flexibility in this piece, and yet it’s all controlled.
Layers of colors – speaking to me about different experiences, chapters in the artist ‘book.’
First a white window appears to me. It seems to float a-top the canvas.
The painting becomes personal. The window seems to morph into the artist – (we are sometimes perceived as our “house” whether we chose to use a mask or clothes to show our ‘house’ or even in dreams we go to the same house, which is thought to be “us” to work things out in).
I see this house. I intuit it to be a house, although it is only a squarish shape – it seems to contain and be a solid. . . . but through the solid is a shape much like a bolt of lightning, a sword. . . is this “hurt”? It is another layer.
There seem to be several stories that may range over a lifetime developed in this painting. It is layered with “energy”, a lot going on yet solid and grounded.
The surrounding black areas aren’t really black. One side is shadowy while the other is reflective – like the black on the back of a mirror. Something, (energy) is bouncing back..
Skillfully crafted, the work reflects many techniques and manifold moods. Time itself seems to play a role and is reflected in different ways in different areas. I think the artist may have layered this painting in such a way that the viewer can only just begin to understand and appreciate the mysterious entirety of the work.
